KURNOOL:
=========

A mother has shocked doctors here by offering her second kidney to her son. She had already
donated a kidney to her elder son two years ago. Now, her second son too is suffering from a
kidney ailment, which requires transplant.

Tragedy has shadowed Bhagyamma of Chetukur in Midtur mandal all through. Her husband
Baliswar Reddy was murdered in 1999 in a faction violence. Sensing the danger to her sons, she
left the village and reached Kurnool to provide them better education.

The success of her two sons - Koteswara Reddy and Yugandhar Reddy - in academics was
short-lived. The elder one, who completed his B.Sc in biochemistry, developed kidney failure.
With great difficulty she pooled money, donated her kidney and got it transplanted in Hyderabad.
Mother and son lived in a choultry for nine months for treatment.

Double whammy
==============

Koteswara secured a rank in B.Ed entrance and joined the course. But he developed blurred
vision and loss of hearing. Dejected by the relapse of the disease, he left home without informing
anyone. Soon after this, Bhagyamma had to come to terms with her second son Yugandhar's
kidney problem. This too required a transplant.

Hospital norms
=============

Government hospitals do not take up kidney transplant if the donor is not a family member. The
family could not afford treatment in a private hospital, since it would cost Rs. 9 lakhs.
Bhagyamma offered to donate her second kidney too. But she was told that it would not work
out. Bhagyamma said she could pool money and arrange for a donor if the Government hospitals
consented to take up the treatment.
